Who Are You Swimming With?
1 Chronicles 12:17 “David went out to meet them and said to them, ‘If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.’”
Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
David, the renowned Psalmist and King of Israel, found himself in a place called Ziklag, pursued by a formidable Great White Shark – none other than Saul, who was determined to take him down. Yet, amidst this tumultuous sea, some companions joined him in his exile.
David recognized the profound need for a community, individuals who loved him and stood by his side. It's like navigating the unpredictable waters of life – when you're surrounded by sharks, having a safety diver, a reliable partner, becomes essential. You need someone you can count on, someone who instills confidence in you, enabling you to navigate those waters with assurance.
Now, consider this: a publication once held a contest for the best definition of friendship, yielding some insightful entries. "A friend multiplies our joys and divides our grief" and "A friend understands our silence" are undeniably true aspects of friendship. However, the winning definition stood out: "A friend is someone who comes in when the whole world goes out."
So, as you navigate the currents of life, consider the companions by your side. Are you swimming with sharks or dolphins? Choose those who come in when the world goes out – the ones who remain steadfast in the stormy seas of life.
Look up Proverbs 18:24 and John 15:13, understanding the sacrificial nature of true friendship exemplified by Christ. How do those qualities translate to you and the friendships you have? Ask God for guidance and wisdom as you navigate your friendships.
Jesus, may we be safety divers for one another, providing support, encouragement, and a comforting presence in times of need. Teach us to define friendship as you do – a bond that multiplies joys, divides grief, and stands firm when the world fades away. Help us choose our companions wisely, seeking relationships that align with your values. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
