We Will Know and Be Known

Read

1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

Think

Most of us have had the experience of not being fully seen or understood. Maybe someone made a snap judgment about you, or they praised the polished version of your life without knowing the struggle behind it. Maybe you’ve spent years trying to prove yourself, explain yourself, or even hide parts of yourself to avoid being rejected.

But what if there was a place where you could be completely known—and completely safe?

In 1 Corinthians 13:12, Paul paints a stunning contrast. Right now, he says, we see as if through a foggy mirror. Our understanding is dim. Our vision is limited. But there’s a time coming when we’ll see with clarity. Not only will we see God face to face, but we will fully know—and be fully known.

That kind of knowing goes deeper than facts. It’s more than recognition. It’s intimate understanding. It’s the ability to see someone’s story, scars, personality, and purpose—and love them all the more. That’s the kind of knowing we’ll experience in heaven.

Imagine for a second what it’s like to sit across from someone who truly gets you. No explaining. No editing. Just connection. Now take that feeling and remove every insecurity, every miscommunication, every ounce of comparison or pride. That’s what heaven will be. Not just perfect worship, but perfect relationships. No egos. No fear. No hiding.

Here on earth, even the best relationships can be complicated. We carry our wounds into every interaction. We misunderstand, assume, disappoint, or retreat. We want closeness, but sometimes our brokenness gets in the way. In heaven, those barriers will be gone.

And it’s not just that you’ll be known by others. You’ll be fully known by God—and still fully loved. There won’t be any inner voice saying, “If they really knew me, they’d walk away.” In heaven, God will see everything about you, and you’ll know with absolute confidence that you belong. You’ll feel no need to run, perform, or hide.

This isn’t just some wishful idea to help us cope with loneliness. It’s a real hope rooted in the character of God. He created us for connection, and heaven is the fulfillment of that longing. If earth is the preview, heaven is the full experience.

Think about it: everything we love about community here—those rare, authentic, joy-filled moments—are just a glimpse. A shadow. We’re seeing the outline. In heaven, we’ll experience the real thing.

You’ll be reunited with loved ones who followed Jesus. But it won’t just be a “recognize their face” moment. It’ll be deeper. You’ll know them in ways that you could never quite reach here. And it won’t be awkward or strained or heavy. It will be right.

The promise of being fully known should do something in us. It should free us to start living more authentically even now. If that’s our forever, why not begin to practice here? If God already sees and loves you completely, why live like you’re still auditioning for approval?

We don’t have to wait for heaven to start dropping the masks. The gospel invites us into a life where we are known and loved, not because we’ve earned it, but because Jesus made it possible. That kind of love rewires the way we see ourselves and others.

Knowing that we will one day see clearly should give us patience now. There are people in your life you may not understand. There are situations that feel confusing. But heaven promises a day when the fog lifts. When the confusing pieces will finally make sense. When the questions won’t be as loud because the presence of God will be louder.

Until then, you can trust that your story matters. Your identity isn’t something you have to prove. It’s something God already knows. And in heaven, you’ll step into the fullness of who you were always meant to be.

This isn’t just about going somewhere someday. It’s about remembering what’s true today. You are known. You are loved. And you’re headed toward a forever where that will be your constant reality.

Apply

Think of one relationship in your life that feels strained or plagued with misunderstanding. Instead of trying to fix it today, spend a few minutes praying for that person. Ask God to help you see them through his eyes—and to remind you that both of you are deeply known and deeply loved.

Pray

God, thank you for knowing me fully and still loving me completely. In a world where I often feel misunderstood or unseen, help me rest in your perfect knowledge of me. Give me grace to extend that kind of understanding to others, even when it’s hard. Let the promise of heaven shape how I live today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
