The God-Gap

Read

John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Think

Have you ever felt full and empty at the same time? Like everything on the surface says you should be satisfied, but somewhere underneath, something is off? You have the job, the house, the relationships, the achievements, and yet there is a gap. A space that nothing seems to close. If you have felt that, you are not broken. You are human. And that gap has a name.

I had a truck years ago with a fuel gauge that broke. Not in the obvious way. It did not drop to empty. It got stuck on full. For three straight days that gauge told me I had a full tank of gas. I drove all over town, running errands, making trips, never once worrying about fuel. Why would I? The gauge said full.

On the third day I pulled into a gas station, not because I needed to, but because I happened to be near one. I figured I would top it off. I put the nozzle in and it just kept going. And going. The tank was nearly bone dry. The gauge had been lying to me for three days. I had been driving around thinking I was full when I was running on fumes.

That broken fuel gauge is one of the most accurate pictures I know of how most people live their spiritual lives. We look at all the external indicators. Career is moving, check. Relationships seem okay, check. Health is holding up, check. Bank account has a balance, check. The gauge says full. But underneath the dashboard, the tank is nearly empty. We are running on fumes and we do not even know it because we are reading the wrong gauge.

Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives." That last phrase is the key. "I do not give to you as the world gives." The world offers peace through accumulation. Get more, do more, achieve more, and eventually you will feel at peace. Jesus says that is a broken gauge. The world’s version of peace is always conditional. It depends on circumstances. If the job is good, you feel peace. If the relationship is stable, you feel peace. If the money is flowing, you feel peace. Remove any one of those variables and the peace evaporates. That is not peace. That is a fuel gauge stuck on full.

I have driven past hundreds of those green hospital signs along the freeways here in DFW. You know the ones with the big white H. Every few miles there is another one. You could drive for an hour and never be more than a few minutes from a hospital. Those signs are there because the highway engineers understood something: people on the road will eventually need help, and they need to know where to find it quickly.

God has placed signs all through your life pointing you toward the only physician who can diagnose what is really going on inside. He is not hiding. He is not distant. He is a few minutes away at all times. But you have to take the exit. You have to pull off the road you are on and actually go to him. Most people see the signs and keep driving because the fuel gauge still says full.

Here is the deal. The gap you feel is not a design flaw. It is a design feature. God built you with a space that only he can fill. Augustine called it a God-shaped vacuum. You can try to fill it with achievements. You can try to fill it with possessions. You can try to fill it with relationships or status or entertainment. And each one will feel like it is working for a while. But the gauge is lying. Those things were never designed to fill that space. They were designed to be good gifts alongside the one thing that actually fills it, which is God himself.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." That is the result of receiving God’s peace instead of the world’s version. A heart that is not troubled. A life that is not governed by fear. That does not mean circumstances are always pleasant. It means your peace is no longer dependent on circumstances. The gauge is finally working. It reads full when it is full, and it reads empty when it is empty, and you know the difference because you are connected to the right source.

I got that fuel gauge on my truck fixed. It was not expensive. It was not complicated. The mechanic just reconnected a wire that had come loose. One connection, and suddenly the gauge was accurate again. I think that is what Jesus is offering in John 14. He is not asking you to overhaul your entire life before you can have peace. He is offering to reconnect one wire. The connection between your soul and your Maker. When that wire is connected, the gauge works. And when the gauge works, you stop driving around on fumes pretending you are full.

Apply

Check your gauge – Take an honest inventory of where you are drawing your peace from today. Is it from your circumstances, your relationships, your achievements? Or is it from God? Identify one "broken gauge" in your life, one area where you have been reading the wrong indicator and bring it to God in prayer. Ask him to reconnect the wire.

Pray

God, I confess that I have been reading the wrong gauges. I have been measuring my peace by my circumstances and wondering why it never lasts. I have been trying to fill a space that only you can fill with things that were never designed to fill it. Today I receive your peace. Not the world’s version, which is conditional and fragile, but yours, which is steady and permanent. Reconnect the wire between my soul and your presence. Help me to stop driving on fumes and to live from the fullness that only comes from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
