It’s Not About Me

Read

2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

Many of us can easily recall the timeless hymn “Amazing Grace” and sing its familiar words. Yet do we truly grasp the depth of its message? “Save a wretch like me” echoes with powerful honesty, yet we often struggle to admit that we truly need that saving grace. Instead, we subtly try to present ourselves as flawless and self-sufficient, masking our brokenness from even God.

We carry burdens of expectation and guilt, attempting to maintain an image of being “amazing” while silently drowning in the pressure to perform. But the truth remains: it’s in acknowledging our weakness and embracing our need for grace that we find true freedom. Just as the hymn declares, God’s amazing grace is what redeems and restores us, setting us free from the facades we try to uphold; God’s grace is what saves us.

We must come to terms with the fact that we cannot save ourselves. And the beautiful paradox is that we don’t have to. It’s in our moments of vulnerability, when we drop the pretense of being “amazing,” that God’s strength is most evident. His grace is more than enough to cover our shortcomings, failures, and struggles. We find peace and renewal when we surrender our striving and simply rest in his grace.

In our weakness, God’s power shines brightest. When we reach our “end” and surrender, we encounter his unending grace. His love for us isn’t based on our perfection or performance but on his own amazing character. He is the one who saves us, sustains us, and will continue to do so, not because we are amazing, but because he is.

Envision yourself sitting across from Jesus. Now, close your eyes and picture a “burden” that you are carrying. Hold out your hands as if you are carrying this weight on your own. Feel its heaviness, the way that it drains your strength. Now, imagine yourself handing the burden to Jesus. Thank him for taking it from you and feel the lightness of no longer having to carry this burden alone.

Pray

Jesus, I am humbled by your grace. Thank you for loving me. Help me to embrace your grace fully and let go of my need for control. I surrender my struggles and weaknesses to you, knowing that your grace is more than sufficient to sustain me. Teach me to extend your grace toward others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
