He Refreshes My Soul

He Refreshes My Soul
Read
Psalm 23:1-3 "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake."
Think
When I was a kid, I wanted this toy called “Tiger Joe” for Christmas. I begged my mom and dad. Please, if you give me one thing, give me Tiger Joe. I thought about it constantly. I dreamed about it. I woke up Christmas morning, and there it was under the tree. Tiger Joe. I tore into the wrapping and started playing with it immediately.
But here is the thing I noticed that morning. My parents were watching me. And they were enjoying watching me play with Tiger Joe more than I was enjoying playing with it. That struck me as strange. I thought, “That is kind of weird. Why would they care so much about watching me play with a toy?” But now I am a parent. And a grandparent. And I understand completely. They were enjoying me, their son, playing with the gift they had given me.
God has given us a gift called rest. He designed it. He modeled it. He commanded it. And God smiles when we enjoy this gift. He wants us to recalibrate and reprioritize and refresh our lives physically, spiritually, and emotionally. When we actually stop and receive the rest he offers, it brings him joy the way watching your child play with a Christmas gift brings you joy.
David opens Psalm 23 with one of the most recognized lines in all of literature: "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing." A complete theology in a single sentence. If the Lord is your shepherd, you lack nothing. Not "you lack only a few things." Nothing. The shepherd provides everything the sheep need. Green pastures. Quiet waters. Right paths. The sheep do not have to forage for themselves. They do not have to find their own water source. They do not have to navigate the terrain alone. The shepherd handles it.
"He makes me lie down in green pastures." I want you to notice the verb. Makes. He does not suggest that I lie down. He does not offer it as an option on the menu. He makes me. That tells you something important about the nature of rest: we do not choose it naturally. Left to ourselves, we keep pushing. We keep running. We keep producing. We treat rest like a luxury we have not earned yet. And God says, "Lie down. I am not asking."
There is a rhythm God built into the fabric of creation. Six days of work, one day of rest. I have talked about this from the stage before. God has a beat, a rhythm, a pulse to how he designed life to work. Six and one. Six and one. Work and rest. Output and recovery. God did not need to rest after creating the heavens and the earth. He is God. He does not get tired. But he rested anyway. He modeled it. He built it into the DNA of the universe because he knew we would need it. A great way to understand it is that after God made the heavens and the earth, God refreshed himself. He showed us what it looks like to stop, breathe, and enjoy what he had made.
"He leads me beside quiet waters." Not raging rivers. Not crashing waves. Quiet waters. Sheep will not drink from turbulent streams because the rushing water frightens them. The shepherd has to find still, calm places where the sheep feel safe enough to drink. God knows that about you. He knows that you cannot receive refreshment when everything around you is churning. So he leads you to quiet places. The question is whether you will follow him there or insist on standing next to the rapids.
"He refreshes my soul." The NIV captures something powerful with that translation. It is not just physical rest. It is soul-level restoration. The deepest part of you, the part that carries the weight of every decision, every worry, every relationship, gets refreshed by the shepherd. You cannot refresh your own soul. You can take a vacation, sleep eight hours, turn off your phone. All good things. But soul refreshment comes from a source outside yourself. It comes from the shepherd who knows what your soul needs before you do.
"He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake." The guidance is not random. It has purpose. It is for his name's sake. God leads you in certain directions not just for your benefit, but for his reputation. When you walk in the paths he has chosen, your life becomes a testimony to his character. People look at the peace on your face and wonder where it comes from. They see you resting when the world says hustle and they want to know your secret. The right paths are not always the easy paths. But they are the paths where the shepherd walks ahead of you, and his presence makes all the difference.
I think about that Christmas morning with Tiger Joe. My parents gave me a gift, and their greatest joy was watching me receive it. God gave us a gift called rest, and I believe his greatest joy is watching us actually take it. Not talk about it. Not plan for it someday. Take it. Today. Let him make you lie down. Let him lead you to quiet waters. Let him refresh your soul. He is smiling when you do.
Apply
Accept the gift – Block out thirty minutes today with no phone, no agenda, no noise. Sit with God in the quiet. Let him lead you beside still waters. Rest is not laziness. It is obedience to a shepherd who knows what your soul needs.
Pray
Lord, you are my shepherd. I lack nothing, but I live like I lack everything. Slow me down today. Make me lie down if I will not do it on my own. Lead me to the quiet places where my soul can be refreshed. I want to receive the gift of rest and bring you joy in the receiving. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
