Feelings and Truth
Read
John 8:31-32 “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”
Think
I sat across from a couple whose marriage was in serious trouble. They had been together for years, but something had broken between them, and they both knew it. I asked them where they were with forgiveness. And the wife looked at me and said, "I’m waiting to feel it." She was waiting to feel forgiveness before she extended it. Waiting for some wave of warmth or compassion or release to wash over her before she could say the words. And I looked at her and said something she did not want to hear. "You’re never going to feel it."
She stared at me. I said it again. "You are never going to feel it. Not first. Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a decision. And the feeling, when it comes, comes after the decision, not before it." She wanted the emotion to lead. She wanted to feel ready before she moved. But that is not how forgiveness works. And it is not how faith works either.
We live in a culture that has made feelings the ultimate authority. If I feel it, it must be true. If I do not feel it, it must not be real. If I feel close to God, then God is close. If I do not feel close to God, then something is wrong. We have built an entire framework for life on the shifting sand of emotions. And when the emotions do not cooperate, the whole framework collapses.
Jesus says something in John 8 that most people quote but very few actually hear. "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Everyone loves that verse. It is on coffee mugs and bumper stickers and graduation cards. But listen to what comes before it. "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples." The freedom does not come from feeling the truth. It comes from holding to it. Gripping it. Refusing to let go of it even when every emotion in your body is pulling you in the other direction.
I heard someone twist this verse once. They said, "Get in touch with your feelings and your feelings will set you free." I almost fell out of my chair. That is not what Jesus said. That is not even close. He did not say feelings will set you free. He said the truth will set you free. And the truth is not determined by what you feel. The truth is determined by what God said. Period.
Your feelings are a gift from God. I want to be clear about that. God created you with the capacity to feel joy, sorrow, anger, compassion, love, and grief. Those are not defects. They are part of his design. But they were never meant to be the foundation. They were meant to be the dashboard, not the engine. The dashboard tells you what is happening inside the car. It gives you information. But you do not steer by the dashboard. You steer by the road. And the road is the Word of God.
Christianity is not something we just feel our way into. It is not, "Well, if I feel a quiver in my liver, it must be God." No. You could have had bad pizza last night. Feelings fluctuate. They rise and fall with your sleep schedule, your blood sugar, your circumstances, your stress level, and a hundred other variables that have nothing to do with the presence of God. If you build your faith on feelings, you will rebuild it every Monday morning.
Here is what I have learned over decades of walking with God. Feelings flow from commitments, not the other way around. You do not feel your way into obedience. You obey your way into feeling. You do not feel your way into worship. You worship, and the feeling meets you there. You do not feel your way into prayer. You pray, and over time, the connection deepens. The commitment always comes first. Always. And the feelings, slowly, steadily, catch up.
That couple I sat across from? The wife made a decision that day. Not a feeling. A decision. She extended forgiveness. She said the words. And she told me later that for weeks, she did not feel any different. But she kept choosing it. Every morning, she woke up and made the decision again. And somewhere along the way, months later, the feeling arrived. Not like a lightning bolt. More like a sunrise. Gradual. Quiet. Unmistakable. But it came after the commitment, not before.
If you are waiting to feel close to God before you come back to him, you will wait forever. If you are waiting to feel forgiveness before you offer it, you will stay stuck. If you are waiting to feel strong before you obey, the obedience will never come. Stop waiting for the feeling. Hold to the teaching. Grip the truth with both hands. And trust that the God who said it meant it. He means what he says and he says what he means. And his truth will set you free, whether your feelings have caught up yet or not.
Apply
Lead with the decision – Identify one area where you have been waiting to feel something before you act. Forgiveness, obedience, a conversation you have been avoiding, a step of faith. Today, make the decision before the feeling shows up. Trust that the feeling will follow.
Pray
God, I confess that I have let my feelings sit in the driver’s seat for too long. I have waited to feel close to you before coming to you. I have waited to feel ready before obeying. Forgive me. I choose today to hold to your teaching whether my emotions agree or not. Your truth is the foundation, not my feelings. Help me to lead with commitment and trust that the feelings will follow in your time. I grip your Word with both hands. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
