Read:

Matthew 1:1, 3, 5, 6, 16, “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham…Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar… Boaz, whose mother was Rahab… Obed, whose mother was Ruth… Solomon whose mother had been Uriah’s wife…Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.”

Think:

Have you ever seen those online quizzes, “,Which character are you?” Usually the quizzes are about movies, TV shows, or Disney heroes, but I just saw one about Christmas characters. I am actually apprehensive about taking the test because this year I would probably be closer to Scrooge than Mary and Joseph.

You may be surprised, but we actually have a lot in common with the characters in Jesus’ story. Jesus’ story isn’t a fairy tale, it is a true redemption story, and his family line includes people from all nations and backgrounds.

Hope is born despite people, but also through people. Hope is born through people who failed, through people who were blatant sinners, through the people you would never expect. That’s what the women in Jesus’ genealogy represent. Why did God include these messy stories in the birth of the Savior of the world? God knew these stories are for all of us, these are stories for the imperfect. Jesus is a Savior for you and me, and the moments when we have lied, cheated, lost our ways. He came for anyone who has ever been lost, hopeless, or marginalized.

Act:

Today, love like Jesus. Take a step toward someone who doesn't look or act like you. Find someone who is hurting, and pray with them. Find someone who is going through a tough time, and encourage them. Even one small step or gesture can make a difference!

Pray:

Jesus, thank you for coming for messed up people like me. Help me to notice others who don’t fit the perfect profile and show your love to them. Amen.
