40 Days Later

Read

John 16:7 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

Think

Have you ever noticed that while we celebrate Christmas, Easter, and Good Friday with great excitement, Ascension Day (40 days after Jesus’ resurrection) often slips by without much fanfare? It's curious, isn't it? We grasp the miraculous significance of Jesus' birth, the profound sacrifice of the cross, and the triumphant victory of his resurrection. But what about his ascension? Why does it matter so much?

Think about it this way: Jesus going back to his Father changed everything for us – believers and non-believers alike. By returning to heaven, Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit, who guides us to recognize our need for a Savior (John 16:8), helps us (16:7) and teaches us (John 14:17; 16:13-15).

Imagine if Jesus had stayed on Earth after rising from the dead. Sure, he could miraculously appear anywhere, settle disputes, and even advise world leaders. But God had a more profound plan. He sent the Holy Spirit, who can be everywhere at once and convict the world of its greatest sin – not believing in Jesus. God, through the Person of the Holy Spirit, partners with us to tell others of Jesus.

The ascension reminds us that Jesus, in his exalted state, continues to work for us and through us. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus calls sinners to himself. Let's not forget the incredible work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the world, glorifying Christ in ways we can't even imagine.

Apply

Allow the Holy Spirit to empower your words and actions for his glory. Tell someone about Jesus and his power in your life.

Pray

God, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to empower and equip me to live for you. Help me to live each day with a renewed understanding of his presence and guidance. May your Kingdom come and your will be done in my life and communities. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
